The restored adobe of the El Presidio Real de Santa Bárbara, The Santa Barbara Royal Presidio was the last in a chain of four military fortresses built by the Spanish along the coast of Alta California, then the frontier of New Spain. It was founded on April 21, 1782, while the American Revolutionary War raged across the continent. The other three presidios are in San Diego, San Francisco and Monterey. November 26, 1973 the Presidio of Santa Barbara was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
